Backpack Journey

I traveled Netherlands and Belgium for one week with my friend.
Though the aim of Journey was to escape from cold London, these
countries were colder than London... But it were so beautiful cities.

We had to save money. went by coach, stayed hostel, walked
as much as possible, like a my university student age’s journey.
My friend who traveled with me was Colombian guy. So during
journey, I found a lot of difference of sense of values from him,
time, food, money, planning, etc... Though we didn’t stay deluxe
hotel and eat delicious food, the journey was valuable for me.

And more pleasure for me was to visit Rietveld Schröder House.
The house is master piece of Rietveld. I really wanted to visit that.

And yet, There were a lot of snow, and everyday was below freezing.
If I had a chance to visit again, I would like to visit summer season!!

Okonomiyaki Party

I hold Okonomiyaki party with my classmates last week.

As I wrote my previous post, I was invited Spanish omelette party.
This party was thanks for the party. I wanted to introduce Japanese
foods and I also missed for a long time. So it was a good chance.

There are some Japanese foodstuff shop in London. Almost goods
are about 1.5 times expensive... but very good selection of goods.
I bought a lot of foodstuff for okonomiyaki from these shops. 

And just in case, I practiced to cook before the party.

Thanks of the practice, my okonomiyaki was so delicious.  

I cooked not only okonomiyaki but also tanuki udon and miso soup.
It was their first time to eat okonomiyaki. So their reactions were so
nice. Though it seemed tofu was not good for them, but they really
liked okonomiyaki and others very much. I really satisfied.

When I arrived in London, I didn’t have any friends. I was so lonely.
But now, I have a lot of good friends. I feel relieve very much.
I’m really glad that I can spend such a great time with my friends.
I've got a lot thanks for such a encounter!!

Business Card

I made my business card.

My current English school will finish end of next January.
I think it’s almost time to prepare for my job hunting in London.

This business card is not only business card but also strong
expression of my decision toward the future. Rest of my period,
I want to gain experience to work in VFX industory in London.
If possible, after that I think I’m able to proceed to next step.
Anyway, I only have to do my best towards getting a chance.

The two colours of my business card are my lucky colours.

Spanish Omelette

I was invited to Spanish omelette dinner party from my classmate.
Two month ago, I ate Spanish omelette at Spanish restaurant.
It was my first time to eat. The taste was really good, so I liked it.

When I talked about that thing, My Spanish friend said to me that
she’ll teach me how to cook and hold Spanish omelette dinner party!
Spanish omelette is different from ordinary omelette. like a cake.
According to her, the foodstuff are only egg and potato and onion.

That day, we gathered in her flat with some compliments.
There were some Spanish foods. Spanish omelette and some kinds
of chorizo and Spanish salad etc. Spanish salad was also different.
Each foods were delicious. I spent a good dinner time with my friends.

I’ll add my cooking recipe. It seemed very easy to cook even to me.
I’ll try soon. I have to increase my poor cooking recipe!

CG School

I’ve been going to CG school since mid-October.

As I wrote my previous post, I delayed the day of starting CG school.
I was really worried about CG class because of my poor English skill.
I finished the class of the tenth times this week. I think I’m going well
so far. Of course I can’t understand all words completely, but most of
words are familiar for me. So I can understand. I’m feeling relieve.

I applied the composite evening course. I want to learn about latest 

composite software. But I already have enough knowledge about CG.
So I needn’t apply full time course. The course is midterm period from
7pm to 10pm and two days per week. Thus this course is suit for people
who already have a experience in CG industry. In fact it’s a good place
to meet people who are working CG industry in London.

They are friendly and gave me advise even thought my poor English.
Though I don’t know whether I could grab the chance, I’ll do my best
and I wish I could start to work in CG industry in London.

Blow Freezing

When I waked up in this morning, snow lay all over the ground.
It was first time for me to see the snow in London.
And temperature was about -2 degree... So it was so cold.

Recently years, we don’t have snow in Tokyo due to global warming.
But I heard UK is getting colder and colder year by year conversely.
The reason guess the cold ocean water from melting polar ice.

Our teacher told us it recorded -21 degree in this January...
I can’t imagine. I really miss Japanese kotatsu!!

English Teacher

When I was a child, I wanted to be a teacher.
 
Because I was influenced by my elementary school teacher. He
was a good teacher that’s why I was inspired by him. And when
I was junior high school student, I liked English so that my dream
was to be a English teacher.

My dream changed nowadays, but I had a chance to be a teacher.
Few days ago, our English school teacher looked too tired. When
one student told her about the thing, she requested us to change
teacher and student like a joke. she asked us in order.

When she asked me, I took the plunge and accepted her request.
I tried to mimic her usual accent and gesture. And when I asked 

her a question, she dared to pretend as a poorly student.
Everyone laughed so much. It was really funny experience.

Only five minutes, but my childhood’s dream was came true.
Happily ever after!!

久々の日本語です。

ブログの背景に使っている写真には実はとても思い入れがあります。
これは2008年のアメリカ旅行の時のサンタモニカビーチでの写真です。
初のSIGGRAPH参戦でロスの安ホテルのロビーで徹夜してデモリールを
作り挑んだもののあえなく惨敗でしたが、色々と思い出深い旅行でした。

その時に一緒に行動を共にしたのがKさんでした。
自分に影響を与えてくれる人、同じ方向を向いて共感し合える人の

存在はとても貴重ですが、Kさんは自分にとってまさにそういう人です。

 
今の自分がこんな決断をするに至ったのも、本気で海外を目指していた
Kさんからの影響が大きいと思います。いままでもたくさんの人達から
多くの影響を受けてきた事を考えると、自分はほんとうに周りの人達に
恵まれていたんだなあと思います。

このSIGGRAPHを通して海外のスケールを体感し、漠然としたイメージ

でしかなかった海外で働くということを本気で考えるようになりました。
そしてサンタモニカのスタジオ見学の際に訪れたこの海岸で、ふるえる

思いで心の底から絶対ここに戻ってくるぞと自分に誓いました。
そんな思い出の場所なのでいつかまた訪れる事ができたらと思っています。

そしてそんなKさんがついに海外へのキップを手に入れたそうです。
ほんとうに自分のことのように嬉しいです。おめでとうございます！
気をつけて行ってきてください。いつか必ず自分も合流します！

　

11th November

When today’s our English class,  
Our teacher suddenly stopped class and said to us
“Please offer two minutes of silent”.
I didn’t know today is the day of end of World War I in 1918.   
People observe a moment of silence 11:11 11th November.

And today is also my father’s birthday. Since live apart,
I realize family is emotional support for me, and my cat too.
Happy birthday!!

Fireworks

I was invited to the fireworks by my friend.
 
The friend is my language exchange mate who was introduced by my
ex-coworker’s wife. He is good man. I’m enjoy to exchange with him.

The day was also his friend’s birthday party. First we went to the party.
And after that, we went at Blackheath to watch fireworks.
The place is famous for The Royal Greenwich Observatory.

It was the first time for me to watch the fireworks in foreign country.
I thought England fireworks aren’t big deal compare to Japan.
But It was so good and beautiful. When I was watching  fireworks,
I remembered and missed my family in Japan.
The fireworks was sentimental as the same as Japan.
It was really nice day.

British Joke

My English school teacher taught me a British joke.

Question : What do we say a deer without eyes?
Answer    : No idea! = No eye deer.
I think that it’s really similar to Japanese oyaji gag...

And today is Guy Fawkes day. I was surprised that to hear the origin
of the name of today. He was fire bug and he intended to set fire to 
parliament in the old days. Fortunately he was arrested. After that
every 5th November, British people burn Guy Fawkes figure and enjoy
to fireworks. I never heard that there is a day of criminal’s name.
 
I think it’s also like a joke.

Tube Strike

Tube strike will be continue for two days from today.

I was surprised that the information was published in official tube
web site. In Japan, the strike is not so common even more public
transport. If JR workers struck one day the capital transport would
be panic. But in London, the strike is common and they often strike.

London tube trains and other equipments seem to be getting older.
I think that there are some problems which must settle.

The workers strike in order to get good work condition as a right.
I feel the difference between Japan and London from such this thing.

Skin Sense

It’s very cold recently.

I often feel about the difference of skin sense between foreigner
and me. Because I always see some people who are wearing a
T-shirt even though other people are wearing a winter coat. And
There are a lot of people who are drinking and eating outside of
restaurant and cafe even though it’s so cold day.

I don’t know whether their sense are actually different or not.
I also heard that European people always waiting for sunlight, 

because summer is short and daylight hours are short for them.

So I can understand their feeling, but I didn’t want to do before.

But I had some chances drinking and eating outside with my friends.
There were some heaters around our place. Unexpectedly It was
so luxury space like eating ice cream in the kotatsu. And I liked it.

Since then, when I went to cafe I became to prefer outside to inside.
Perhaps it might one of the reasons I caught a cold again last week...
Anyway, I’m enjoying winter in London. But I’m eagerly waiting for
next summer!!

Air Mail

There was a really glad thing for me.

Because I received a letter that my ex classmate had sent me from
Slovakia. As I wrote my previous post, I gave a Japanese Origami
as a gift on her farewell party. It seems thank-you letter for the gift.

We were studying together only one month, but It’s a good memory.
If I hadn’t decided to go to London, I wouldn’t met her and classmates.
I really realize these experiences are important and valuable for me.

I’ve never been to Slovakia and other my classmates’ countries. But
I’m going to travel European countries during my staying in London.
At the time, I want to visit their countries and meet them again!

 

日本語の誘惑

ネットのおかげで、海外にいても日本に住んでいるのと変わらない
情報や娯楽を手に入れることができます。大変便利で重宝しますが、
今の自分にとっては、とても危険な存在で悩みの種でもあります。

英語に慣れるためには英語以外使わないのが一番だと思いますが、
やはり情報の伝達、取得のスピードが圧倒的に違うこともあって、
特にネットではたびたび日本語の誘惑に負けてしまいます...。
必要な場面もありますが、普段の思考が英語になるようになるべく
あらゆることを英語でこなせるようにしたいなと思います。

その試みの一つとして、これからはこのブログも英語で書いて
みることにしました。日本語で書くべきかなとも悩みましたが、
自分の思考を英語でまとめるのはいい訓練になるはずです。

あまり全部を極端にやるとたぶんノイローゼになると思うので、
なるべく英語で恋しくなったら時々日本語という感じでやって
いこうかなと思います。
しばらくは中学生英語の拙い文章になると思いますが...。

また英語の習得はもちろんなんですが、こっちで日本に対しての
意見や知識を話す機会が意外と多く、逆に日本のことももっと
きちんと知らなきゃいけないなということも実感しています。

決して日本語を拒絶しているわけではないので、連絡の際は
遠慮なく気軽に日本語でお願いします！
　

ランニング

先日、日本からの別送の荷物がやっと到着しました。
中身は本や洋服やおせんべいなど色々ですが、ついに
待ちに待っていたランニングセットが届きました。

ロンドンにはたくさんの大きな公園があって、街を歩いていると
ランニングしている人をよく見かけます。日本ではかなり不定期に
続けてきた趣味ですが、こっちに来てからいやがおうにも走りたい
欲求にかられていました。

日本での不健康な生活で肥えた体を戻す良い機会いでもあるし、
ランニングしながら街や人を観察するのはなかなか面白いです。

せっかくこっちに住んでいるのだからと、ロンドンマラソンに
申し込もうとしましたが、想像以上の倍率だそうで既に応募は
閉め切られてました...。東京マラソンも毎回抽選もれでしたが、
一回くらいはフルマラソンに挑戦してみたいものです。

日々寒くなってきている感じですが、夕暮れ時にはまたに
ハッとするほどきれいな夕焼けに遭遇することがあります。
冬突入までのつかの間の穏やかなこの季節を楽しもうと思います。
  

焦燥感

気が付けばもう10月になりました。

一ヶ月過ぎてしまったと思ってたら、二ヶ月はさらにあっという間。
英語は思ったように上達してないし、しばらく仕事も離れてしまって
いる状況になんだか言いようのない焦燥感にかられる時があります。
こんなことは考えてもしょうがないとわかってはいるんですが...。

で、ここにきてロンドンで初めての大風邪を引いてしまいました。
日本から持って来た風邪薬を飲んでもいっこうに良くならず、結局
もうろうとしつつ病院に行ってきました。さすがに保険の手続きを
英語でやる気力がなかったので、日系の病院です。

なんだか踏んだり蹴ったりですが、ひさしぶりに何もしないで
ボーと寝ていたら気持ちもリフレッシュ。というわけで完全復活！

ちなみに今回の医療費は全額負担だと190£(25000円)になるところ
でした。保険ありがたや。元気が一番です。

　

おりがみ効果

英語の学校のクラスメイトが母国に帰る事になりました。

スタートが一緒だったこともあって、たったの一ヶ月間とはいえ
せっかく仲良くなったのに別れるのは、やはりさみしいものです。

みんなで送別会をした時に、自分は折り鶴をプレゼントしました。
日本に興味があると言っていたのでとても喜んでくれて、急遽
その場でみんなに折り紙教室をすることになりました。
日本の折り紙は、海外の人達にはすこぶる反応が良いです。

びっくりしたのは次の日に、他の友達が頑張ってカエルを作って
持って来てくれました。うーん自分よりも上手かも...。

ちょっとした折り紙ブームです。持って来て良かった！

　 　　

海猿

「海猿 THE LAST MESSAGE」が公開されました。

自分は幸運にもこの作品に参加することができました。
本当に大変な作品でしたが、内容的にも仲間にも恵まれて
この上ないやりがいを感じながらやらせてもらいました。

そしてこの作品が前職での最後の仕事となりました。
積み上げてきた環境を離れることにかなりの葛藤がありましたが、
この経験があったからこそ思い切って決断ができたとも思います。
それだけ思い入れの強い作品です。ぜひヒットして欲しい！！

　 　

ATM

イギリスの紙幣は£5、£10、£20、£50の4種類で、日本の一万円札に
相当するのが£50札になるのですが、いまだに見たことがありません。
カード社会ということもあって高額紙幣はあまり使われないようです。

実際街中のATMでお金を引き出すと、£20札を上限として少額紙幣が
多数混ざった組み合わせで出てきます。これは小銭として使いやすい
ようにとの配慮なんだと思いますが、その事を知らずに多額のお金を
引き出すとその量にびっくりします。

学費をカード一括払いしたら、限度額に達してしまい仕方なく現金で
家賃を用意したのですが、ものすごい量のお札になってしまいました。
なんだかとんでもない大金を払っている錯覚に陥ります...。

 

英語の学校

今通っている英語の学校はとても国際色豊かです。

クロアチア、スペイン、モロッコ、コロンビア、イタリアからと
多国籍で、クラスの中では自分が唯一の日本人です。
年齢層はだいたい20-30才くらい、学んでる理由もみんな様々で
ラマダン中とかそれぞれのお国事情が垣間見えたりして新鮮です。

先生達も個性的で、まるでコメディアンのような先生もいれば、
マシンガンのようにしゃべる先生や褒めまくる先生などなど。
飾り気のない正直きれいとはいえない最低限の設備の学校ですが、
自分的には気に入ってます。学費が安いのもありがたい！

英語の上達具合は別として、顔見知りの友達もだいぶ増えたので
気持ち的にもホッとしつつ、楽しんで毎日通ってます。   
 

ドキュメンタリー

その日の撮影は午前中の英語の学校からスタートしました。
大きなカメラとガンマイクを持って、授業中はもちろん帰りの
電車の中でもスーパーでもカメラを回します。

家に戻ってからも撮影は続き、昼ご飯は日本食がいいということで、
お寿司とうどんを作りました。その後インタビューも受けたりして
夕方に終わった時にはぐったり。いやー疲れました...。

なんてことのない自分の日常に何を見いだすのかわかりませんが、
すごい貴重な経験ができたなぁと思います。

おそらくひどく頼りない自分が映っているんだろうと思いますが、
ある意味一番ダメな状態の記録なわけで、あとはここからどれだけ
成長できたかで、このドキュメンタリーはのちに面白いものになる
んだろうと思います。

こんな時期があったんだなと思えるように頑張らなくちゃですね。
